If you are here researching VEILANCE, I am pretty sure that you are aware of its history and are now looking for validation to justify your relatively expensive purchase. Well, we are happy to share our experience and opinions.
There are three main characters who shape today’s VEILANCE – Tyler Jordan (founder of 7mesh, Errolson Hugh (founder of Acronym, and Taka Kasuga (formerly worked for Junya Watanabe – Comme des Garçons). If you are interested in the details, you might like this article: the past, present, and future of VEILANCE.
Let’s start talking about the design, shall we? At first glance, the VEILANCE design was aiming at the business smart-casual audience, it is much more than just that, it actually portraits itself as versatile performance wear that could be worn from business occasions to any extreme outdoor activities. It’s sleek and minimal construction portraits you as a sophisticated (and a somehow avant-garde) professional who emphasizes functionality and quality, meanwhile, you could as well turned into a hardcore explorer (who has an exceptional wardrobe).
VEILANCE is ranked highly in the practicality department, its functionality is straight to the point – it gives you what you need exactly, nothing more. For instance, both Monitor Down Coat‘s front pockets are padded to keep your hands warm and large enough to store your personal belongings. Two internal pockets (one situated on the right, another on the left) for your important items such as wallets, passports, and Rolexes. Its padded hood keeps your head warm during snowy and rainy days. On top of that, the Gore-Tex Pro membrane keeps you dry, VEILANCE’s insulation is so warm (highly breathable) that it allows you to wear a t-shirt underneath throughout the winter (around 0 degrees Celcius).
Price is rather subjective, for average folks like you and I, VEILANCE is very very expensive. Its Monitor Down Coat cost US$1600. Unless you have millions of dollars lying around, you would probably want to think for a little while before pulling the trigger. If you are able to afford, go get one!
Regarding VEILANCE’s technology, we will briefly talk about its conceptualization (how it is being made) and the use of materials. VEILANCE has developed its own patterning system – Ergonomic 3-Dimensional Patterning (E3D), it actually allows designers to experiment and to test its ergonomic execution digitally. E3D not only shortens the product-development-cycle but also helps to increase the design accuracy (it means the end product would not differ much from the initial designs drawn on papers). In addition, as mentioned earlier, VEILANCE’s choice of materials is of industry’s highest standards such as Gore-Tex and Coreloft™.
For the folks who have high sustainability concerns, VEILANCE might not get on your list. Although VEILANCE does not explicitly mention any sustainability-related initiatives, it introduces the RE-SYSTEM – a fancy-self-created word for upcycling (or reselling used clothes). Everyone starts somewhere sometime, I hope to see VEILANCE further develop its concern for the environment and utilize sustainable materials to craft excellent products in the future.
Overall, despite its lack of sustainability concern and its high price tag, it is indeed an amazing brand that focuses on technologically advanced clothing that actually improves life. VEILANCE has definitely made a great impact in “bringing back the actual purpose of clothing” and in shaping the future clothing industry.
