Airo is not a common electric car. Born from the collaboration between IM Motors and Heatherwick Studio, Airo was designed not only as a driving alternative with a low environmental impact, but also as a solution to clean air pollution.
With a futuristic and an unremarkable technical approach, Airo features a compact urban design. It runs completely on electric power 一meaning no fossil fuel pollutants are used一 and it incorporates autonomous and driver-controlled modes.
The Chinese electric vehicle company and the London-based design studio launched this exciting concept during the Shanghai Motor Show last April and it is expected to enter production by 2023.
Thanks to a HEPA filtering system, the electric car can clear the surrounding air as it is driven, kind of working like a vacuum that cleans other cars’ pollution. The HEPA filter catches the harmful chemical particles through several traps, leaving behind nothing but clear air. The Airo concept is actually a great solution for big cities with severe smog problems.
The design is friendly, curvy and unique: because it is an autonomous automobile, the interiors had to be rethinked and Heatherwick Studio did a great job on this task. Functionality is clearly Airo’s core element. All the wasted space was repurposed and turned into pure comfort: the interiors can in fact be altered to the owner’s convenience.
The inner space can be customized in order to become a dining space with a table for four (rotating seats allow travellers to face each other), a gaming pod with an extendable screen or a sleeping place. Take a look at Airo’s images that will transport you to a greener and innovative future:
