The world of art has changed a lot technically speaking, not only for its always evolving, dynamic cycle, but also for the pandemic and the development of new technology. Art has become interactive, digital, metaphysical, hybrid and immersive.
Technology has pave the way for new forms of communication and experimentation and the U.K. has become a testimony of it. In fact, next Spring the country will become home of the first-ever permanent gallery for immersive digital art.
The new permanent gallery will be located in the The Reel Store, which was the former building of the Coventry Evening Telegraph newspaper. It is a massive space of 8,610-square-feet that will be will provided with an adaptive sound system and fourteen large-scale 4K laser projectors.
Moreover, the space is situated in the city of Coventry, which was recently named as U.K.’s City of Culture during 2021.
The Reel Store’s first exhibition will be presented by Turkish artist and designer Refik Anadol, who is known for its machine learning art and has been named as “the artist of new media communication”. Machine Memoirs: Space is indeed one of the artworks that will be presented at the new permanent and immersive art gallery.
Referencing the relationship between machines and humans, Refik Anadol has digitally reinterpreted two million photographs taken by NASA satellites and telescopes, which have been made public. The upcoming exhibition aims to make spectators think about an alternative universe or future, where both parties can coexist and collaborate.
The Reel Store’s will be inaugurated in April next year and here you’ll find further information about the opening. Speaking of the future of art, teamLab will be part of Maison&Objet Paris 2022.
